Beach in California flooded with 'indecent' sea worms

The beach in California was suddenly covered by pulsating eheurid class sea worms. American social networks exploded. Writes about it with the BBC.

Despite the fact that echiurids are not fish but sea worms, this species is often called the “penis fish” for obvious reasons.

Typically, these worms live under a layer of sand, but several severe storms occurred in the Drakes Beach area, resulting in these invertebrates without a roof over their heads.

“Next time you go to the beach, just imagine thousands of pink sausages swarming a few centimeters below you,” Bay Nature magazine said on Instagram.

“Yes, there are questions about the appearance of the worm. But we must remember that it has an ideal form for life underground,” writes biologist Ivan Parr.

Scientists believe that worms have existed for 300 millions of years. Some of them live up to 25 years, which is very long for invertebrate.

Relatives of ehiurid found in California also live in Asia. In Korea, they are considered a delicacy.
