Obama will punish Russia for election cyber attacks

The administration of 44 US President Barack Obama is working to ensure that he can apply countermeasures against Russia, which the US intelligence agencies consider responsible for cyber attacks against the American electoral system.

In addition, measures are being developed that will not allow elected US President Donald Trump to overturn this decision overnight after taking office, reports The Washington Post.

In 2015, new rules went into effect allowing the executive branch to impose sanctions and punish hackers who harm the economic and national security of the United States. However, now these measures cannot be applied against those who tried to interfere in the elections, since the electoral system does not fall within the scope of national security. Therefore, the only option is to equate the election system with the country's critical infrastructure, which is what the Obama administration intends to do, while limiting the ability of the next president to reverse this decision.

The draft of the relevant document is already at the stage of final coordination of the details. The announcement of the US response to cyber attacks can be made even before the New Year. It is possible that it will include operations in cyberspace.

Sanctions primarily provide for the blocking of all accounts, assets and arrest of blacklisted persons in the territory under US jurisdiction.

Those who are under restrictions will also not be able to get a US visa. At the same time, the White House does not exclude criminal investigations.
