Obama personally warned Putin about the US response to hacker attacks

US President Barack Obama said that Russia's attempt to influence the elections in America will be answered, and that he warned Russian President Vladimir Putin about this.

He said this during an interview on National public radio.

“There is no doubt that when any foreign government tries to influence our elections, we need to act. And we will act - when and where we deem it necessary. Some of them may be explicit and public, and some may not. And Mr. Putin is aware of my thoughts on this matter, because I personally told him about it,” Obama said.

He added that there has always been an understanding between countries about the introduction of secret agents into the work of other countries to obtain information, but cyber attacks and espionage are actions of a different order that are unacceptable and must be responded to. An even more serious violation of tacit international agreements is the activation of agents of a country to influence elections in another state.

Therefore, according to Obama, the United States has long been engaged in the development of a proportional and meaningful response to Russia.

Obama noted that in the near future, the world will have to develop new rules of the game to avoid cyberwar, and at the same time stressed that the economic and technical capabilities of the United States are better than those of most countries when it comes to cyber opposition.

Asked by the moderator, does Obama believe that Trump will continue the policy of retaliation against Russia, if the current president’s administration does not have time to complete them before January 20, Obama said that he was not sure about this, but added that he did not consider Russia’s response political or party action, and a necessary component of government, therefore the new president, regardless of party affiliation, must continue this course.

“We must not allow the bickering within our American family, the internal political differences between Democrats and Republicans, to overshadow our need to stand together to answer why Russia is suddenly interested in our domestic election process,” Obama said.

He stressed that all Americans together should focus on preventing such actions from Russia in the future.

Deputy Obama's national security adviser Ben Rhodes said that the Russian and American leaders talked about the electoral hacks in September during the G20 summit in Hangzhou, writes Medusa.

In response, the Kremlin said: "The topic was touched upon, and, on our part, a very clear answer was given, which, perhaps, did not fit into what Barack Obama tried to explain to us."
