Nobel Prize in Medicine

Three scientists - Michael Young, Jeffrey Hall and Michael Rosbash — received an award for research that showed the connection between a person’s daily physiological rhythm and his health. Scientists have discovered the molecular mechanisms, the so-called cellular clock, that determine the human circadian rhythm. This rhythm controls metabolism, body temperature, sleep, and hormonal levels.

Nobel Prize in Physics

American scientists Kip Thorne, Rainer Weiss and Berry Barrish were awarded this award for their contribution to the design of the detector LIGO (laser-interferometric gravitational-wave observatory), thanks to which last year gravitational waves were detected.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry

The winners were Jacques Dubose, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson. Their achievement is the creation of a karyoelectron microscope, which allows determining the structure of biomolecules. Using a karyoelectron microscope, one can observe living molecules and study the three-dimensional structure of the protein.

Nobel Prize in literature

The winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature became a British writer with Japanese roots - Kazuo Ishiguro. Kazuo Ishiguro was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature with the following formulation: “for revealing, in novels of great emotional power, the abyss lurking beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world.”

Nobel Peace Prize

This year Nobel Peace Prize received an international campaign for the destruction of nuclear weapons ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons). This organization was created in 2007 year, and currently it includes more than 100 countries.

Nobel Prize in Economics

In 2017, the prize received American economist Richard Thaler "for his contributions to behavioral economics." Thaler is known as the author of the theory of “controlled choice” (nudge), which is based on the study of the influence of psychological aspects on the behavior of people in certain economic situations, when a person acts differently from what classical economic theory implies.

Why are there no women among the laureates

At the same time, the Nobel Prize is not awarded to women in any of the categories for the second year in a row due to the lack of women among the nominees.

So explained the current situation Secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Goran Hansson during a press conference on the occasion of the award in the field of economics, reports Sveriges Radio.

“We are very proud of our award winners this year, as well as last year and everyone else. But we are also saddened that in the future so few women receive this award. This is partly due to the fact that we have to wait until a particular discovery is tested and confirmed. And 20-30 years ago there were fewer women among scientists. But I’m not sure that’s a complete explanation,” Hansson said.

He also recalled that today three of the six committees that decide to award the Nobel Prizes are headed by women. In addition, women are members of all such committees.

According to Hansson, the Nobel Committee is interested in more women scientists nominating for the prize. But while the number of nominees still remains small.

According to him, in the 2018 year, the committee will independently determine women scientists who deserve the nomination and ask those who have the right to nominate them - the committee members themselves do not nominate themselves.
