Nobel Peace Prize awarded to fighters with nuclear weapons
The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to the International Campaign for the Destruction of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), stressing that the risk of a nuclear conflict was no longer as high as it is now.
"Voice of America" reports that the committee awarded the Geneva-based organization “for working to draw attention to the disastrous humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and efforts to achieve a ban on such weapons based on an appropriate agreement.”
ICAN calls itself a coalition of community organizations from more than 100 countries. The coalition originated in Australia, but was officially founded in Vienna in 2007.
“We live in a world where the risk of using nuclear weapons has not been so high for a long time,” said the leader of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen.
In July, the countries of the Nuclear Weapons Treaty, such as the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France, did not take part in the negotiations on 122 countries.
Unlike other Nobel awards, the Peace Prize Ceremony takes place in Oslo, on the same day as in Stockholm, on December 10, on the day of Nobel's death. The amount of each award will be nine million Swedish kronor (million US dollars).
