Thunderstorms and tornadoes: powerful storms hit the west and south of the USA
Strong storms caused tornadoes, strong winds, hail and rain in some areas of the Midwest and South, caused significant damage to property, but, fortunately, no one died. Writes about this USA Today.
Tornadoes were spotted in Arkansas, Illinois and Iowa; on Saturday, March 28, thunderstorms erupted in the area. Strong winds and tornadoes were also recorded in Indiana.
The National Meteorological Service said it was still evaluating the damage and determining the strength of the tornado. Among the sites that suffered were a shopping center in Jonesboro (Arkansas), and a residential building in the northeastern Iowa community in Oelvin.
In Jonesboro, most stores were closed due to problems with the coronavirus, which helped minimize the number of tornado injuries.

“We know about 18 wounded, two were hospitalized. Thank God there were no casualties, ”said Craighead County Judge Marvin Day.

Day did not report the condition of the two hospitalized, but said that the injuries did not threaten their life.

Jonesboro Municipal Airport and Busch Agricultural Resources were also hit hard. Because of the tornado, the Union Pacific train also went off the rails.

Amanda Treiber, a spokeswoman for the railway company, said 112 cars had gone off the rails, releasing undisclosed flammable liquid and paint that were not harmful. Triber said the train crew was not injured. Workers cleared the site and trains resumed operations at about 09:00 on Sunday, March 29.

The area from the mall east beyond Jonesboro Airport was closed. According to Day, a curfew has been imposed on the community. About 70 people live in Jonesboro, located about 110 miles (75 kilometers) northwest of Memphis (Tennessee).

In Oelvin (Iowa), part of the wall of a 12-apartment building was torn off by a whirlwind and damaged the skin of another building. Police said no serious injuries were reported.
