'We are sitting here like in prison': the captain of an arrested ship with Russians threatens to block the Bosphorus
The captain of the vessel arrested in Istanbul with a crew from Russia Streamline Bachman Bagirov reported RIA Newsthat it intends to cut off the Bosphorus, if the company-owner Akca Shipping does not find a replacement for the Russian seamen and does not pay them wage arrears.
The ship Streamline, which left Rostov-on-Don for repairs to Istanbul, was arrested in June 2018 for the debts of its previous owner. The Russian crew of the cargo ship demands that the arrest be lifted from the ship, allowed to go to the dock for repairs and pay wage arrears.
At the end of February, the first court hearings were held in Istanbul on the withdrawal of the arrest from the ship, they lasted only 20 minutes, the next meeting was scheduled for April 2.
Akca Shipping debt to seafarers currently exceeds thousands of dollars 123, Bagirov reported earlier. He also stated that eight crew members appealed to the shipowner, the Turkish company Aksa Shipping, with an urgent request to replace the crew with full payroll.
“The crew has been on the ship for more than 10 months, we are sitting here like in prison, separated from our families. Our patience is already at its limit, and we are forced to resort to extreme measures. If our legal demands are not met by tomorrow, we will weigh anchor and block the Bosphorus, notifying the relevant services,” Bagirov said.
The captain of the cargo ship told RIA Novosti that, according to an estimate of the Turkish lawyer hired by the seamen, it would take about two years to return the wage debt.
“The lawyer believed that if the court does not make a decision on April 16 or makes a decision not in favor of the company, about eight months will be spent on the procedure for selling the vessel, which is organized by the plaintiff. And plus XNUMX months for payments - at least two years. Now we need to file an application with the court so that when the plaintiff company sells the ship, our debt will also appear in the case,” Bagirov said. He also clarified that the crew is expecting to go ashore to draw up notarized powers of attorney to file a claim in court for wage debt any day now.
The ship Streamline flying the flag of the Comoros was sold by its owner, registered in Belize by Seamann, Turkish company Aksa Shipping. It arrived for repairs in Turkey last June and is anchored to the port of Istanbul. However, at the request of the Turkish company Alpex, which received Streamline for rent from the operator Megion, a court in Istanbul arrested him. Alpex is demanding a refund of 190 thousand dollars previously spent on repairs to the vessel, however, Seamann argues that it did not give consent for the ship to be leased and it was carried out using forged documents.
