Doctors managed to establish the source of a large-scale outbreak of salad poisoning in the US

The worst E. coli outbreak in the United States in a decade has sickened 210 people in 36 states. Twenty-seven of the victims had kidney failure. Five people have died - deaths were recorded in Arkansas, California, Minnesota and New York. The source of the E.coli bacteria was Romaine lettuce grown in Arizona. Finally, last Thursday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released an official statement: the source of infection had been found and contained.

According to CDC officials, the immediate cause of the contamination was irrigation canals in Arizona. Water contaminated with E. coli came into contact with plants that ended up in stores and markets, causing the bacteria to be transmitted to people. The official statement says the E. coli outbreak “appears to be over,” writes Weather.com.

State and federal officials had previously conducted an investigation that led to Arizona, the Yuma area. The CDC conducted an environmental assessment of soil, water, and fertilizer in the area and discovered the source of contamination in the irrigation canal. Officials say eating salad is no longer dangerous. The party that was shipped from Yuma on April 16 is over, and the subsequent ones are not a threat.

E. coli bacteria are often found in beef - the bacteria likely came from cattle farms located upstream on an irrigation canal. The report notes that the FDA "continues to investigate the outbreak to learn more about how E. coli bacteria may have entered the water and how that water may have contaminated the lettuce."

According to the CDC, Escherichia coli is a collection of bacteria found in "the environment, food and the intestines of people and animals." Although bacteria are usually harmless, some types of them can cause diarrhea, severe infections, including pneumonia and even death, the CDC added.
