Powerful tornado in Texas: three people killed, about 100 injured

A destructive tornado ripped through Perryton, Texas, on Thursday, June 15, in the evening. At least 3 people were killed, about 100 were injured, and the city was left without electricity. The publication told more about the disaster ABC13.

The north and east sides of the small town were hit hard, with mobile homes and communications towers destroyed, Perryton fire chief Paul Dutcher said. According to him, 3 deaths have been confirmed, about 100 people are being treated at a local hospital.

Several departments are responding to tornadoes.

The Texas Emergency Management Division has organized a team from Amarillo, Texas, and is sending an AmBus capable of carrying 10-12 patients, Dutcher said.

“We have a lot of patients in the hospital who will need to be transported,” he said.

There is currently no electricity in Perryton.

“Our crews arrive at the scene and help remove the wires from the cars and move them out of the way. We monitor the power lines going into the city and also assess possible damage at the main substation in the city. The city appears to have been unaffected, but we have de-energized it for safety reasons,” Xcel Energy said in a statement.

Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to deploy the state's emergency response resources to address urgent needs in Perryton.

“The State of Texas is quickly deploying critical emergency response resources to provide all the support and assistance needed to protect Texans and provide relief to those affected by the Perryton tornado,” Abbott said. “I encourage all Texans to heed the guidance of authorities and take all necessary precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones.” We remain ready to quickly provide any additional resources needed during this severe weather event.”

Ohiltree General Hospital is running on generators amid massive power outages, hospital spokeswoman Amy Marrufo said.

As of the evening of June 15, seven tornadoes had been recorded in Texas, Oklahoma, and Michigan.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for Brunswick, Georgia, Jacksonville, Florida, eastern Louisiana, and southern Mississippi.

Georgia and Alabama also suffered from heavy rains and floods. More than 24 inches (7 cm) of rain has fallen in Albany, Georgia in the past 18 hours.

Earlier (Wednesday, June 14), storms brought heavy hail and strong winds to Mississippi and at least 10 tornado reports in Texas, Alabama and Georgia.

The plains are bracing for inclement weather as well, with parts of southeastern Colorado and southwestern Kansas facing severe thunderstorms. Residents in the region should expect dangerous winds up to 80 miles (128,7 km) per hour, hail up to 4 inches (10,1 cm) in diameter and possible tornadoes.

On Friday, June 16, more storms are expected (from Colorado to the Gulf Coast) with destructive winds and hail as the main threat. Severe storms possible June 16 from Virginia to New Jersey.

Meanwhile, dangerous heat is baking the south. Record high temperatures are possible in the coming days in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas (Texas) and New Orleans (Louisiana).
