Nine beaches in California with the dirtiest water: swimming there can cause stomach diseases, ear infections and rashes
Slather on sunscreen, bring flip-flops, towels and maybe a book. The main thing is to remember to check the water quality at your beach. What are the dirtiest beaches in California, the publication said The New York Times.
Heal the Bay, a non-profit group based in Santa Monica, has released its 33rd annual report on how safe California beaches are for swimming. Swimming in polluted water increases your chances of developing stomach problems, ear infections, rashes, and more.
According to the report, 95% of California beaches received clean water quality ratings between April and October 2022, when we swim in the ocean most often. The report said that only 23 of the more than 400 beaches in the state had alarming levels of pollution during those warmer months.

"We're lucky to have beaches on the west coast that are beautiful and clean most days of the year, but unfortunately there are times and conditions when beach water causes people problems," said Tracey Quinn, CEO of Heal the bay.

The report also contains some bad news. During rainy weather, water quality tends to drop dramatically as the rain washes debris, chemicals and feces into the ocean. That's why you shouldn't swim in the ocean for at least 72 hours after a storm.
And, as you well know, we have had a lot of rainy weather this year. So when Heal the Bay experts studied water quality all year round, not just during the warmer months, only two California beaches — Point Loma Lighthouse in San Diego County and Bean Hollow Beach in San Mateo County — met the highest standards of cleanliness. . A year earlier, 51 beaches were included in this rating.
One of the main factors in the decline in quality was large spills of sewage. Where stormwater enters the domestic sewer system, heavy rainfall can flood sewer lines and cause them to overflow. According to Heal the Bay, in the 12-month period from April 2022 to March 2023, about 45 million gallons (170 million liters) of sewage spilled into the ocean or California coastal waters. The figure for the previous year was 29 million gallons (109 million liters), which was already considered an alarming amount.

"So we've had two years of really big wastewater, and a lot of that has to do with outdated infrastructure and the need to upgrade it," said Katherine Pease, director of science and policy at Heal the Bay.
