Migration services open hunt for those who have expired their visa
Migration services are increasingly paying attention to illegal immigrants who remained in the country after the expiry of the visa, and want to tighten control over their deportation.
The US Department of Homeland Security stated that the service could not cope with the number of illegal immigrants who have expired visas. Of the 1,2, a million illegal immigrants with an expired visa were able to delay only about 3400. According to the latest data, for every migration officer there are 350 offenders.
This is much less than the speed of identifying those who illegally crossed the border, which means that people who pose a risk to national security continue to work in the United States, the Inspector General of the Department of National Security said in his report.
It is difficult for federal agents to track criminals, because the government is still not strictly controlling their departure from the country. This refers to those who arrived on a tourist, business or student visa.
The inspector gave a vivid example: “The suspect in the investigation was listed in the database as having left the country, but he gave the ticket to a family member, and he still lives in the United States.”
Because of such inaccuracies in the database officers ICE spend a lot of extra time to understand who was left and who left.
In addition, several terrorists hijacked the 11 September 2001 aircraft were among the people who did not leave the United States at the end of their visa.
The migration service began to pay more and more attention to such illegal immigrants, since the flow of illegal immigrants through border points is decreasing, and the share of those who did not leave the country at the end of the visa is growing.
If in the 2015 year, 500 thousand people overdue their visa, now this figure has grown to 1,2 million people, the inspector general said.
President Donald Trump urged the Department of Homeland Security to quickly complete and implement a system that would track such violations at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta.
The ministry also plans to issue a report in the near future that will cover almost all categories of visas, so the government will better represent the scope of the problem.
But Congressman Bob Goodlatt, chairman of the chamber’s legal committee, said that as long as the government does not monitor all migrants' trips with a visa that has ended, it will not know what is happening.
“Visa security is a national security issue, and it is critical that we know who is entering our country and when they are leaving so that we can protect American citizens and our interests,” the Virginia Republican said.
More than 20 years ago, Congress required the introduction of a biometric entry-exit system, but the administrations of both parties were unable to implement it, citing logistical obstacles.
