The best and worst states in the safety of children in the car

Making sure children are properly restrained in the car is the most important thing parents can do to save their child in the event of a car crash, says a new study that examined deadly traffic in every state.

Researchers also found that in some states, infant mortality during a car accident is very different from other states.

Using data from the Department of Transportation on road traffic accidents involving children, as well as the number of children in each state from the population census, researchers at the Brigham Women's Hospital could compare the infant mortality rate in each state. Their research is published in the journal Pediatrics.

The data showed that in the period between 2010 and 2014 years, 18 116 children suffered in accidents, where 15,9% of them died.

The five states with the lowest mortality rates are:

1. Massachusetts 0,25
2. New York 0,29
3. New Jersey 0,32
4. Washington 0,33
5. Rhode Island 0,33.

Five states with the highest mortality rates:

1. West Virginia 2,16
2. Montana 2,23
3. Alabama 2,71
4. WY 3,06
5. Mississippi 3,23.

In Mississippi, the worst-performing state, 38% of children who died in traffic accidents were unbelted or improperly restrained.

The high mortality of children as a result of road accidents is seen in the states with rural areas. For example, 92% accidents in Montana and 89% accidents in Wyoming occurred on rural roads. All due to the fact that the roads in rural areas are not always in good condition or less illuminated. All this can lead to severe accidents.

Parents living in rural areas should be aware that the risks are higher there and that they should drive as carefully as possible, making sure that the children are fastened properly in the car seats, depending on their size and weight.
