6 advice from scientists how to raise a child a good person
Psychologists from Harvard University conducted comprehensive study, which resulted in several strategies for how to raise a child a really good person.
We offer you 6 main steps to raising a child a kind and sympathetic person.
1. Teach children to manage their emotions.
Even an adult can sometimes cope with feelings such as aggression, anger or sadness, and for a child they can be simply insurmountable. Explain to your child how to recognize these emotions, and how to respond to them from other people. Teach them healthy strategies (you can watch them here) how to cope with stress, pain and frustration. Set hard boundaries when it comes to destructive behavior due to these complex emotions. Teach your child how to calm himself down, and also practice different ways of resolving conflicts.
2. Talk with children about ethics, responsibility and their role in the group and society
Most children are very interested in talking on the topic of morality, and this can be used to educate them good people. Discuss with them the ethical issues that are raised on television and on the Internet. Ask the child what kind of world he would like to live in and what he can do to make the world so. Keep in it the ideas of volunteering and other similar impulses, in addition, demonstrate a good example of your own behavior, find a place where you can volunteer together.
3. Expand the world of your child
Children show natural empathy for their friends and family members. Expand their range of interests to more people. Ask your child to imagine what it would be like to be a new student in class or move to a different city. Share how much it would mean to a new kid in the class if your child invited them to play or visit. You can also discuss global issues - how to solve the problem of children who do not have enough food or who do not have housing.
4. Practice gratitude at home
Your child may have a gratitude list, either in writing or just in his head. You can practice daily conversations at the dinner table, where everyone expresses what they are grateful for to the world, God, parents, friends, etc. Teach your child that showing gratitude through words or actions is right and good. For example, you can express gratitude to your grandmother by helping her bake cookies or by drawing her a picture.
5. Establish and adhere to ethical standards
Set clear and clear ethical standards of behavior in your family, explain them to your child, constantly repeat and adhere to them yourself. We are talking about behavior, about the manner of talking, about keeping promises, etc. You can ask the teachers at school to emphasize the importance of these forms of behavior. But at the same time it is very important that the parents and the close environment of the child also adhere to them.
6. Spend time with the kids to get to know them.
If all your communication with children will be reduced to their disciplining, then you will not be able to be an effective educator and a good parent. Communicate with children, ask them open-ended questions about their interests and friends. Do something fun, draw or play sports. Children who have constant communication with their parents feel more confident, open and kind.
