A cruise ship has run aground and is waiting for help in the most remote corner of the world.

A luxury cruise ship carrying 206 passengers ran aground off the coast of Greenland on September 11. The ship made its maiden voyage just two years ago, in 2021, reports ABCNews.

Ocean Explorer, a 104,4 meter long and 18 meter wide ship, ran aground near the Alpefjord in Northeast Greenland National Park, the world's northernmost national park.

While there have been no reports of injuries or damage to the ship, officials are taking the incident very seriously.

“Our units are located far away and the weather can be very unfavorable,” said Brian Jensen of the Joint Arctic Command.

“Arctic Command has contacted the cruise ship Ocean Explorer. It is still stranded in the National Park. This means that the tide, which came in during the day local time, did not help the ship. Arctic Command is still in contact with appropriate ships nearby that may help free the cruise ship," the command said.

The nearest Danish Navy ship was about 2220 km away. The Unified Arctic Command is en route to the ship and is expected to make contact with Ocean Explorer on September 15.

The ship, owned by the Ulstein Group in Ulsteinvik, southern Norway, made its maiden voyage just two years ago in 2021. The ship offers a gym, Jacuzzi, boat excursions and state-of-the-art amenities and “maximum passenger comfort,” according to its website.

“With seating for just 134 passengers, Ocean Explorer was purpose-built for expedition voyages to the world's most remote destinations. This small ship is equipped with the latest cutting-edge technology and navigation capabilities,” AE Expeditions says on its website detailing the vessel.

Meanwhile, authorities contacted another cruise ship in the area and it was asked to remain nearby to provide assistance should the situation develop negatively.

“The most important thing for us is that everyone is safe,” Jensen said.

According to Greenland's tourism board, the national park is so remote that only a limited number of people can access it. Every year, more people climb Everest than tourists visit Northeast Greenland National Park.
