NATO will hold its largest exercise since the Cold War: they will prepare to defend against a Russian attack

NATO countries are going to hold in February-March 2024 on the territory of Germany, Poland and the Baltic countries the largest joint exercises since the Cold War, reports Meduza.

According to a NATO official, the Steadfast Defender exercise will include 500 to 700 combat air sorties and maneuvers of more than 50 ships. More than 41 soldiers are expected to take part in them.

The exercise scenario assumes that NATO troops are repelling Russian aggression against one of the alliance members. The simulated enemy is a coalition led by Russia. To create more realistic scenarios for troops, the exercise plans to use real geographic data.

In total, 32 countries will take part in the exercises - 31 NATO members and Sweden, which submitted an application to join the alliance, but it was not ratified by Turkey and Hungary.

The exercise is part of NATO's new training strategy. The strategy calls for the alliance to conduct major exercises not once, but twice a year. According to NATO representatives, with these exercises the alliance wants to demonstrate to Moscow its readiness to conduct military operations.

Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, NATO began to rapidly transform from an anti-crisis alliance into a combat one, writes the Financial Times. In June 2022, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said that the alliance would increase the size of its high-readiness forces from 40 thousand to more than 300 thousand people. NATO has stationed multinational battalions in the Baltics to slow the advance of any aggressor in the event of an invasion.
