A Ukrainian was robbed at the Toronto airport: he lived there for three days because he had nowhere to go

A Ukrainian stranded at Toronto airport became the victim of a robbery - thieves stole all his belongings, reports Kitchener.

The Ukrainian had most of his belongings stolen during his three-day stay at Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport.

Vitaly Laktionov landed in this air harbor last week. Since he had nowhere else to go, he stayed at this airport terminal. According to the Ukrainian, while he was sleeping, someone took almost all his belongings, except his phone.

“I felt terrible because I was completely alone. My English is weak and I had no friends or relatives in this city,” he admitted.

The guy's clothes, passport and all documents were stolen. The airport connected him with Grassroots Response to the Ukrainian Crisis (GRUC). “They sent him to us, and we began the process of restoring all the documents, finding clothes for the guy,” explained Stephanie Hertz, the founder of the group.

“It’s great because we are all Ukrainians,” Vitaly said with a smile.

He is one of more than 850 people GRUC has helped over the past two years.

The group has about a dozen properties in Waterloo, each housing several people.

Without government funding, the organization is turning to the community for support. Page GoFundMe created in hopes of raising $200 in rentals for more properties.

“We provide Ukrainian refugees with clothing and food, teach them English - and we provide all this within two to three weeks,” Hertz explained.

Deadline

March 31st is last day, when Ukrainians can enter Canada with a CUAET visa and receive special benefits, as well as all kinds of support. Because of this, Hertz laments, there is now a large influx of people arriving in search of housing. Many of them have nowhere to go.
