California is the most populous state in the United States since 1964, when the region’s population reached 18 million. According to forecasts, in 2018, the state population will reach 40 million people.

Edition Daily News analyzed how the ethnic, gender, and age structure of state residents will change in the next 30 years.

As of January 2018, the population of California is about 39,6 million people, which is more than the total population of these 13 states: Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota and Nebraska.

As of July 2017, the ethnic composition of California’s population was as follows: 38,9% Latin, 37,7% White, 14,8% Asian, 6,5% African American.

The racial and ethnic composition of the population of California varies greatly from district to district.

Of the 58 districts, only in 12 the ethnic composition is close to the ethnic composition of California, among them Solano, Alameda, San Joaquin, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange, Riverside, San Diego and Fresno. In other districts, the ethnic composition is often close to the composition of other states, as shown in the following infographic.

In 1970, the percentage of California's population aged 65 or older was 9%. This age group is projected to make up 2018% of the state's population in 15, rising to 2048% by 25.

1970 year:

• Middle age: 27,6 years
• Percentage of population at age 65 +: 1,7 million people or 9%
• 20-64 years: 10,9 million people or 55%
• Younger than 20 years: 7,3 million people or 36%

2018 forecast year:

• Middle age: 36,3 years
• Percentage of population at age 65 +: 5,9 million people or 15%
• 20-64 years: 23 million people or 59%
• Younger than 20 years: 10,4 million people or 26%

2048 forecast year:

• Middle age: 42,3 years
• Percentage of population at age 65 +: 12,19 million people or 25%
• 20-64 years: 26,29 million people or 54%
• 20 younger than years: 10,25 million people or 21%
