In the state of New York, a child stuck in a snowdrift and died
13-year-old Joshua Demarest died after a huge snowdrift, in which he played, fell, covering the guy with tons of snow.
Another teenager Tyler Day, who was next to him, was saved after he spent several hours in a snow trap in Greenwich, New York, writes with the BBC.
A snowdrift could fail due to the pressure on it of new layers of snow. Tyler, who is in the hospital, says he heard crackling sounds before he “fell into the darkness”.
Rescuers were summoned by Tyler’s sister when, after 17: 00, he did not return home.
Service dogs tracked the route of the guys and found in the snow drift sledges on which the missing children rode.
Soon, the teenagers themselves were discovered deep in the snow. One of them reacted to rescuers, the second was unconscious. He later died in the hospital.
To reach the children, rescuers had to dig more 7 tons of snow with shovels. At the same time, they had to act quickly - the guys got 10 minutes after detection, although they had spent several hours in the snow before.
Tyler managed to escape due to the fact that he landed in the air "pocket" and was able to breathe, being in a snow trap.
