Domestic turtles provoked an outbreak of acute infections in 13 states
The outbreak of salmonella, which affected at least 21 people in 13 states, is associated with domestic turtles. It is reported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
At least seven people were hospitalized as a result of the Salmonella outbreak in Oranienburg. At the time of writing, no deaths have been reported.
“Epidemiological and investigative data indicate that contact with domestic turtles is a likely source of this outbreak,” the CDC said on Wednesday, October 9.
12 of the 17 respondents confirmed that they had contact with the turtle before they became ill. This further confirms the suspicious connection.

Six cases are reported in California. Illinois, New York and Washington state recorded two cases of infection. Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, Tennessee and Vermont also recorded one case, according to the CDC map.
“Patients reported contact with different types of domestic turtles, the length of which did not exceed four inches (10 cm),” officials said.
The US Food and Drug Administration "banned the sale and distribution of tortoises with shells less than four inches long as pets."
According to the CDC, turtle litter is often a source of Salmonella bacteria. These microbes can spread to other areas in the tank or turtle's habitat.

“People can get sick after touching a turtle or something in their habitat,” the CDC says. Officials warn the owners of turtles not to "kiss and hug" reptiles.
A disease can be prevented if:
- Wash hands thoroughly;
- To clean the turtle habitat;
- Do not allow it to move freely in places where food is prepared.
Salmonella infections can cause diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal cramps. According to the CDC, older people and infants are more likely to have the disease. In the US, Salmonella causes about 1,2 million diseases per year.
