27-year-old Kate McClure of New Jersey decided last October thank homeless war veteran by the name of Johnny Bobbitt, who helped her at night on the road, giving her last $ 20 to a distressed girl. McClure has created a page on the site GoFundMe and collected for it $ 402 706, for which the man promised to buy a house. Fallon says that he and another lawyer, Jacqueline Promislo, are working to get the money back and protect the client’s interests, and that 14 thousands of people who donated money to GoFundMe can be sure that their money went exactly where they wanted .

A spokesman for GoFundMe said that “he is exploring the abuse of this campaign.

“When a dispute arises, we work with all parties involved. We will work to ensure Johnny gets the help he deserves and that donors' intentions are respected," GoFundMe said in a statement.

The company stressed that cases of misuse of money are very rare, and constitute "less than one tenth of all campaigns."

The relationship between Bobbitt and McClure began to deteriorate when she and a friend bought Bobbitt a camper—they had originally promised him a home—and parked it in the driveway of their New Jersey home, where Bobbitt lived until late June 2018.

“It was not his choice and he had no rights in the matter. Johnny would prefer to return to North Carolina. It would be much better for him,” says lawyer Promislo.

Promislo said that the caravan was bought for the money collected in GoFundMe.

Fallon said that Bobbitt has problems with drug addiction, and perhaps for this reason, McCleur did not want to give him more money.

In an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer, McCleur said that she and the guy did everything they could to help Bobbit. She said that she gave him more than half the money, but keeps the rest until he gets a job and stops using drugs.

The girl's boyfriend said that he controls the money, and believes that they did not do anything wrong with her friend. According to him, giving so much money to a drug addict is like giving someone a loaded gun.

But Bobbitt claimed the couple used the money to buy a new BMW and go on vacation to California, Florida and Las Vegas (Nevada). But the couple denied the allegations, saying that they used personal funds for this. Boyfriend McClure said he spent $ 500 in Las Vegas from GoFundMe, but returned the money on returning home.

According to Promislo, Bobbitt now lives again on the streets of Philadelphia. He successfully underwent treatment and detoxification in the methadone clinic.
