Los Angeles will pay $ 2 million to a homeless family shot by police

Los Angeles (California) City Council agreed to pay almost 2 a million dollars to a homeless man killed by police in the Skid Row area three years ago.

The Council approved the compensation in 1,95 million dollars to settle a lawsuit filed by relatives of Charlie Keunang after his murder, writes CBS.

Cameroon citizen Keunang was a mentally ill homeless person. 1 March 2015 police responded to a report that 43-year-old Keunang attacked a neighbor on the Skin Row sidewalk and set up his tent in the middle of the street.

The video taken by the witness shows how a homeless man fights with the police on the street, then several shots are heard.

This murder triggered a wave of protests in Los Angeles for the rights of African Americans.

The Los Angeles Police Commission in 2016 decided that the use of weapons against Keunang was justified, saying that the officers killed him in self-defense. The Los Angeles District District Attorney did not prosecute any of the officers.

In May 2018, the jury decided that two of the officers involved in the shooting should be financially responsible for the death of Keunang. The third officer who participated in the incident was discharged.

Frames from the officers' breastplates, published almost three years after the incident, show that one of the officers warned Keunang that he would be hurt if he did not comply with the requirements of the law enforcement officers. During the ensuing struggle, the officer’s scream that Keunang has a weapon is heard. The policeman shouted it twice before the shots sounded.

An autopsy revealed that Keunang had methamphetamine in his blood and six bullets in his body.

On August 22, the city council approved compensation for the family of the deceased in order to settle the lawsuit filed by her. Initially, Keunang's relatives requested 20 millions of compensation.
