Instead of MetroCard: New York Metro Launched Fare
31 May Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will launch the OMNY contactless payment acceptance system. It should replace the MetroCard system, writes AM New York.

The new system will be launched in stages, starting with 16 subway stations on the 4, 5 and 6 lines in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The new technology will also be available on Staten Island buses.
How does OMNY work?
Residents of New York will be able to pay with a contactless credit card (debit or credit) or via a smartphone and smart-watch, attaching them to the card reader installed in the turnstiles.
How do I know if I have a contactless card?
Contactless cards look like regular cards, but they have a special symbol, similar to the designation Wi-Fi. This card can be issued in the bank.

How about cash payment?
After launching OMNY, passengers will not be able to pay in cash. We'll have to wait until MTA launches a special OMNY card, which is expected to be available at retail stores in 2021, or in new vending machines in 2023.
Can I buy a weekly or monthly travel card?
Until the system is launched throughout the metro and bus lines, the option of preferential travel and travel will not be available. It is expected that by the end of 2020, the MTA will start offering weekly and monthly low rates.

Which metro stations are equipped with OMNY technology?
Sixteen subway stations that serve Lines 4, 5 and 6 between Grand Central - 42nd Street in Manhattan and Atlantic Avenue - Barclays Center in Brooklyn must be equipped with the technology by May 31.
When will OMNY launch the entire system?
OMNY is expected to start on all metro lines and bus systems by the end of 2020, but MetroCard will run until July of 2023.
