The American developer fired the car, and no one could stop it

Last year, US developer Ibrahim Diallo experienced a most unpleasant adventure. One morning he came to work (the name of the company was not disclosed), but he could not get through the checkpoint because his pass was blocked. The next day, they began to disconnect him from all corporate accounts and systems, and after a few days, the guards were ordered to take him out of the building. At the same time, neither the developer manager, nor the director of the company understood what was happening, and could not prevent it.

As it turned out, Diallo fired the robot, namely the corporate automation system. A year later he outlined a story more like an action movie script on your blog. AIN.UA cites its reduced content.

The plot

It all started when, one day, Diallo woke up a phone call from an 7 recruiter in the morning. He rightfully ignored it, and when he later heard the voice message, he was very surprised. “Oh my god, are you okay?” The recruiter asked. Since Diallo was in perfect order and he had no problems at work, he decided that the girl just got the wrong number and went to work.

I worked at the company for more than 8 months and my work spoke for itself. I was praised regularly, people were impressed by my work. I got along great with everyone. I was sure that I had done nothing bad to anyone.

However, an unexpected nuisance awaited him. Ibrahim refused to work at the pass-pass card - instead of a benevolent green light, red and white lights came on over and over until security guard Jose, who knew Diallo by sight, missed him.

Suspecting something was wrong, the developer called the recruiter, who woke him up with that strange call, and asked if he had any problems worth knowing about. “I'm not sure,” replied the girl. “I received a letter about you this morning ... I think this is a mistake.” I'll talk to the manager and call you back. "

She didn’t call back that day, but Diallo Sam’s immediate supervisor assured him that he had no complaints about the developer.

However, Ibrahim's misadventures did not end there. The next day, when he arrived at work, his pass to the territory did not work, and Diallo had to wait for the guard under the irritated signals from the drivers lining up in turn after him. At the developer’s pass-card, the developer flashed red again, and Jose missed it with his key.

Diallo decided that something was wrong with the card - perhaps it had demagnetized. The manager promised to make him a new one as soon as possible, but in the meantime he advised him to use a temporary pass - it would expire on 19: 00, and Ibrahim would have to write out a new pass from the security every morning. But he was in no hurry to despond.

Having somehow solved the problem with the pass, the developer went to the workplace and began to fulfill his duties. A few hours everything went as usual, until he needed to log in to Windowsto close the task in Jira. Then he found that his account in Jira locked.

Diallo was called by a recruiter who, constantly apologizing, informed him that he was suspended. She learned about this from an email that arrived that day. But what is most interesting, the direct manager Ibrahim did not know anything about this removal - she did not receive any orders and had no idea why the Diallo account in Jira locked. She created a task for the support team so that they could restore the developer space to the developer.

The next day, everything just got worse. José was unable to print out to the developer a temporary pass, because in the system Ibrahim Diallo was noted among people whose entrance to the building is strictly prohibited. The manager had to go down to personally escort the developer to his office.

After that, the problem was decided to involve the director of the company.

The tipping point

The director was a high, imperious woman who laughed at Diallo's question about what was going on. She called the support department and immediately took steps to restore the developer’s tolerances and bring everything back to normal, after which she assured Ibrahim that by the end of the day the problem would be solved.

He was still in her office and saw how her face had changed when she received a letter saying that Ibrahim Diallo had been completely and irrevocably removed. The case is closed, and she can do nothing about it.

Diallo worked on a tool in which the company invested several million dollars. And with the dismissal of the developer and the removal of all his accounts, hundreds of thousands of entries on this project were blocked, the interface showed no signs of life.

He had to hack the server to restore the data and reactivate the services, after which he was able to continue working.

By the end of the day, when Diallo was about to go home, he crossed again with the director, who was still hanging on the phone with the support. She assured that tomorrow they are waiting for him at work and he is not fired, but the next day the developer was already blocked in all systems except Linux. The time tracking system, on the basis of which employees were paid, also did not work, so Diallo left half the day to manually document their work.

Culmination

After lunch, the guards materialized at the Diallo table - they were instructed to get the developer out of the building.

The headmistress was furious. It turned out that the security letter received a threatening character with the order to immediately escort Diallo from work. “Who the hell sends these letters?” She screamed.

I was fired. My manager couldn't do anything about it. The director could not do anything about it. They watched helplessly as I collect things and leave the building.

For the next three weeks, Diallo watched from home as his business moved to higher levels, but no high-ranking official could do anything. Sometimes he was sent letters to his case, written with inhuman indifference in a frightening red font. “Turn it off, turn off something, cancel access here, cancel access there, escort from the room, etc.,” recalls Diallo.

The system was thirsty for blood - and I was its first victim.

Finally, Diallo called the recruiter and said that he could return to work. In the office, an explanation of everything that had happened was waiting for him.

Decoupling

Ibrahim Diallo was hired shortly before the company that hired him was swallowed up by another, larger one. By the time he worked 8 months, and his three-year contract had to be renewed in the new system. However, the previous manager, who was fired immediately after the takeover, did not. And when the term of the old contract expired, the machine turned on, which formed an automatic order for the removal of Diallo.

As soon as such an order arrives in the system, a step-by-step process of dismissing an employee from work is included. The first step: the pass card is blocked - from this moment the chain is started and the process is irreversible. Next, the employee is disconnected from all accounts, entered into the list of persona non grata, and the final stage is an order to throw him out of the office.

The simplest error in the automation system led to a catastrophe. I was escorted out of the building as a thief, I had to make excuses to people, why I was at work at all, my colleagues distanced themselves from me, everything except the manager, who supported me as best she could.

What I used to call safety at work turned out to be an illusion. Automation can be an asset for a company, but there should be a way for people to seize the initiative from the machine if it makes a mistake.

Although working at such a large company was a good opportunity for Diallo, after everything that happened, he decided to leave. He missed three weeks of work due to the fact that no one could cope with the machine. Of course, for this period he was not paid.
