American legend: who the Texas Rangers are and what they do

The iconic icon that became an American legend imbued with the spirit of romance the difficult and dangerous work of protecting law and order in the state of Lone Star, as Texas is exaltedly called. But the series is a serial, but I would like to figure out what kind of organization this is - the rangers, and how they differ from the police and sheriffs.

The Texas Rangers are a unique unit unparalleled in other states.

It exists as a division of the Department of Public Security, but its history began almost two hundred years ago, when the first ten-man squad was created to protect the displaced.

Ranger jurisdiction extends to the entire state, but does not go beyond its borders.

The duties of the rangers are somewhat reminiscent of police officers, or rather even of Texas FBI agents.

They investigate criminal offenses, search for criminals, provide security for judges, and conduct their own investigations against organized crime.

When necessary, rangers interact with other law enforcement agencies - in the field with sheriff's departments, federal agencies, or with municipal police in cities. The Rangers have enough power to lead the investigation and enforce the law.

During court hearings, judges can use rangers as bailiffs to maintain order and protect those involved in the process.

And statesmen, if necessary, have the right to demand the protection of the rangers during elections or at any other time. That is, rangers are universal soldiers of the law.

The headquarters of the rangers is located in the capital of Texas - Austin, and in major cities of the state - six divisions. In total, the structure of the rangers now consists of about one hundred and sixty people, but if necessary, they can attract up to three hundred.

The Rangers have a Special Weapons and Tactics Team, an Intelligence Team, a Special Response Team, a Crisis Negotiation Team, and a Border Security Operations Center. Rangers also participate in specialized programs to investigate unsolved crimes and programs to combat corruption in the community.

Rangers do not have special uniforms, so they can wear whatever suits them, but historically there has been a certain style, very accurately conveyed by Chuck Norris - the style of the Wild West. It includes a western hat, pointed cowboy boots and a wide belt.

Ranger shirts prefer white or khaki. They buy all the clothes at their own expense, but the government partially compensates them for the costs. When participating in field operations, they wear uniforms similar to those of the military.

The rangers also have badges, also known to everyone from the films - a five-pointed star in a wheel, although the tradition of wearing them appeared not so long ago. For a long time, the Rangers rightly believed that a shiny chest badge was an excellent target, so they preferred to carry them in their pockets. Historically, their sign is the star of Texas, and these badges were made from Mexican coins in denominations of five pesos.

The Rangers have participated in many of the most important events in Texas history and are considered culturally significant to Texans - their organization is legally protected from dissolution.
