At the same time, he refused to confirm or deny information from the American media that the virus could have “escaped” from a laboratory in Wuhan.

“This laboratory studied strong viral materials. We knew about this, we knew that they were working on such a program, many countries have such programs,” Pompeo said, avoiding a direct answer.

On April 16, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected suspicions that the virus had "escaped" from a laboratory, citing statements from the World Health Organization that there was no evidence that the coronavirus had been man-made.
