7 products that will cost more due to trade war with China
President Trump's trade war with China is heating up. This means that Americans will soon have to pay more for some groups of goods - from furniture and electronics to food and clothing.
On Monday, the presidential administration announced new 10-percent duties on Chinese goods worth 200 billion dollars. Fees will enter into force on September 24 and reached 25% on January 1. Almost half of all Chinese imports to the United States will soon be taxed, writes Time.
Beijing responded Tuesday by announcing tariffs on $60 billion worth of American goods, prompting Trump to raise the ante again by returning to threats to slap tariffs on another $267 billion of Chinese products. The first round of duties on goods worth 50 billion began to take effect in the summer, the president spoke about increasing this figure to 500 billion.
“This will hit every American family in the wallet in 2019,” said David French, senior vice president of government affairs at the National Retail Federation.
Some policy-sensitive products were able to evade the new tariffs. These include Apple gadgets and products such as bicycle helmets and child car seats.
And here are the products that will cost more:
Home decor and accessories
The duties will affect many household appliances, including refrigerators, vacuum cleaners and kitchen appliances, for example, devices for heating plates. Prices for home decor may increase: lamps and lighting elements, as well as wooden furniture, including cribs. According to the NRF report, the total prices for furniture are likely to increase by 2-4 percent, as manufacturers pay a part of the new duty, and some impose on consumers.
Electronics
While some popular Apple devices escaped the new rules, other hardware and electronics brands were targeted. These are communication devices - modems, Internet routers and “smart speakers”. A recent study from the Consumer Technology Association found that tariffs on circuit boards and related devices could push prices up as much as 6%, costing U.S. consumers up to $3,2 billion a year overall.
Apparel
Some types of hats, as well as fur and many popular fabrics were among the goods to which the duties apply. Given the constant demand for low-end clothing, it may be one of the first categories of products that will face tangible price increases, said Simon Lester, deputy director of the Center for Trade Policy Studies at the CATO Institute.
Travel Items
According to the NRF report, items such as backpacks, suitcases, wallets, phone cases, handbags, and similar items may become more expensive by 5-10%.
Food and Drinks
Fruits, nuts, grains, flour, vegetables and other popular products (like soy sauce) may cost more due to the new tariffs. Prices for seafood may also increase significantly, since they are already unprofitable. Seafood company Chicken of the Sea "is unable to absorb the costs of the tariffs and is forced to pass them on to consumers," warns chief executive Valentin Ramirez.
Автозапчасти
According to the Detroit Free Press, the new tariffs will affect more than 100 different types of auto parts. “Increasing vehicle prices are a serious concern,” Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said Tuesday.
Paper, personal care products and ... almost everything else
Personal care and beauty products (makeup, shampoos) are also included in the list. Other items as varied as dog leashes, calculators, sporting goods, paper and pet supplies are also included in the latest round of tariffs.
