US President Donald Trump threatened US withdrawal from the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The corresponding statement he made in an interview with the agency Bloomberg.

According to Trump, the organization should better relate to the United States in order to maintain the country's membership.

“If the organization does not change, I will withdraw from the WTO,” said the head of the United States.

The US withdrawal from the WTO would potentially be much more significant for the global economy than even the growing trade war between the States and China.

Last month, Trump said that the United States is in a very disadvantageous position because for many years the WTO has a very bad attitude towards the country and that this organization needs to “change its behavior.”

US Trade Representative Robert Lightheiser stated that China’s admission to the WTO in 2001 was a mistake. He has long urged the US to apply a more aggressive policy towards the WTO, arguing that the organization is unable to cope with non-market economies, such as China.

Lightyzer accused the WTO dispute settlement system of interfering with US sovereignty; the States are blocking the appointment of judges to the WTO appeals body, increasing the likelihood that it may cease to function in the coming years.

Since the Second World War, all US presidents have made efforts to establish and strengthen global trade rules in the hope that they will bring stability to the global economy.

The WTO was created in 1994 year as part of the efforts of the major economies of the world, led by the United States, to create a platform for resolving trade disputes.

One of Trump’s main claims to the WTO is that the organization’s judges too often oppose the United States, especially in cases involving the country's anti-dumping regime.

According to the Cato Institute, the US lost almost 90% of cases filed against the country in the WTO. But at the same time, the United States won more than 90% of the cases that the country had brought against other members in the organization. In addition, the States filed more complaints than any other WTO member.

The European Union is making efforts to reform the WTO to smooth out the conflict with the United States. Last week, officials from the EU and Japan visited Washington to discuss possible changes in the organization.
