A member of the gang MS-13 opened fire on the subway in New York: one person died. VIDEO

Six shots were fired during a fight on a subway platform in Queens around 1 pm on Sunday, causing panic as people scattered for cover. One man was seriously injured and died on the spot. The shooter and his accomplice managed to get away, but police detained one of the suspects on Monday afternoon.

Police said the victim was wounded in the head. Everything happened at the 90 metro station on Elmhurst Avenue near 12: 45 of the day, writes New York Times. No one was arrested on Sunday as police searched for the two attackers and determined the motive for the crime.

Video from a mobile phone shows how the victim fights with two men who are pressing on the victim from above. Two other men tried to stop the fight. Apparently, the fight began in the train on the seventh route, plying through Queens and Manhattan.

The policeman confirmed the authenticity of the video, where you can see a large man in a gray hood and a multi-colored scarf with a gun in his hand. As he rose to his feet, the victim reached for his weapon. Six shots rang out and the victim fell.

Bidur Basta, a fellow traveler whose video was used by police, said: “At first I thought they were just drunk people arguing. But as soon as this man started shooting, I got scared.”

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. On Sunday, officials did not identify the victim due to lack of documents.

The police did not find out whether the men were acquainted before they met on the train, they also establish a possible fact of the connection between the victim and the attackers with the gangster groups.

Andy Byford, head of the metro, made a statement:

“I want people to know that despite this horrific incident, which is being actively investigated, the subway is completely safe – both as a public space and compared to other modes of transport, such as cars.”

Transit Police Chief Edward Delatorre said that for every million passengers passing through the subway system every day, only one crime is committed. The described case was the first murder in the metro in more than a year. Fights on the subway are relatively common, but deaths are extremely rare.

Eyewitness Bista said the victim and his attackers fought over control of the gun, and those around him asked subway officers to intervene - but no one did anything.

"He probably could have taken that gun and the person wouldn't have lost his life," Bista says. He also expressed bewilderment at how the criminals managed to escape, since the police, according to him, very quickly cordoned off the station.

The next day, law enforcement sources reported that the shooter is a member of the criminal gang MS-13, and the victim was a member of the gang of 18 Street, one of those who compete with MS-13, writes Fox News. Both gangs are active in the area where the murder occurred.

“This incident is beyond terrifying,” said MTA spokesman Max Young. “While our system and city are safer than ever before, we have zero tolerance for violence of any kind on subways and buses. The safety of our customers and employees will always be our number one priority.”

Monday afternoon Fox News reported citing a police source that the suspect was taken into custody. His name is not called. The source said that police are currently conducting an interrogation.

“We have a person in custody,” the source said. “The motive for the murder is gang related.”
