Residents of Califonia have witnessed a dangerous fire tornado. VIDEO

What could be more frightening than a tornado? Is that a tornado, consisting of fire and poisonous gas! A stunning video was shot by casual witnesses on Saturday: a huge cloud of smoke and ash saturated with carbon monoxide gas, tied into a powerful vortex funnel in dangerous proximity to people.

The video was filmed by a married couple south of Blythe, a city located in Southern California on the border with Arizona. When the afternoon sun heated the earth, and the air temperature reached 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 Celsius), a source of fire formed in the southern part of the city, writes The Washington Post. Soon the flames grew and turned into an air monster that rotated with hurricane force, spewing smoke 25 000 feet (7,6 kilometers) up.

The wind was initially blowing from the south at 10 to 20 mph, causing the smoke to drift in a northerly direction. The central part of the smoke column encountered winds from the north, and the upper part from the east. The combination of the changing speed and direction of the winds caused the huge cloud to begin to spin.

The red versus green contrast is clearly visible on radar, demonstrating movement within the flow. The cloud even produced some rain, but the droplets evaporated during the intense rotation. Satellite images also show the top of the tornado, a difficult-to-reach segment of cloud where the upward motion is so strong that it may not be picked up by equipment. This is the signal of an aggressive updraft strong enough to create a tornado.

Intense heating on the ground can fan miniature whirlwinds of fire, but in this case everything happened differently - the rotation began from above. In the first minutes of the video, an obvious rotation is visible in a cloud of smoke. Please note that this happens counterclockwise. This rotation was caused by objective factors in the atmosphere. Based on the video, experts estimated wind speeds of 80 to 90 mph (128 to 145 km/h). The temperature inside the toxic whirlpool, saturated with carbon monoxide, most likely exceeded 500 degrees Fahrenheit (260 Celsius).

In California, events that are technically classified as tornadoes have happened before. The largest storm hit the area south of San Luis Obispo on April 7, 1926, so powerful it traveled nearly 1000 yards. The vortex was particularly intense, equivalent to a violent tornado. It traveled nearly 1000 yards (just under a kilometer), lifted a house 150 feet (15 meters) into the air and killed two local residents.
