How much do illegal immigrants cost Americans?

Due to the growing number of families of illegal immigrants crossing the US border, the expenses of the border patrol themselves are increasing.

Over the past six months (from October 2018 of the year to March of the 2019 year), agents detained 25 000 immigrants. In 2019, food, baby products and local medical care are expected to cost four times as much as during the same period a year earlier.

The City of Yuma is the only border city that declared a state of emergency as a result of a surge in immigration.

Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAlinan reported on additional 650 officers who were sent to hard-hit sectors. 50 officers went to Hume, in addition to 800 agents, but this did not solve another problem: lack of space in federal institutions for immigrants.

Three border posts in the region can accommodate 400 people, but in recent weeks there are up to 500 people. Agents in the region detain people from 100 to 200 per day (sometimes to 350) and they have nowhere to send people while they are being processed and initial medical examinations, as a rule, this happens during 72 hours after they are taken into custody.

“We only have one hospital, and it has to serve the entire community, which is all of Yuma County. Our [emergency departments] are already at capacity before we even start dealing with the undocumented people we have to take to the hospital,” he said.

Last year, people in custody at the border patrol received medical care for $ 700 000. The bills were paid by local taxpayers.
