Refugee cities for immigrants again received a warning from the prosecutor

US cities that fail to cooperate with federal immigration authorities could lose millions of dollars in support from the US Department of Justice. US Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced this on Monday, writes Voice of America.

The so-called "cities of refuge" that help illegal immigrants to avoid deportation often refuse to notify the US Immigration and Customs Service of release from the detention of illegal immigrants.

Donald Trump, who during the election campaign repeatedly stated the need to combat illegal immigration, by his decree of January 25 ordered US government to stop funding cities that provide asylum. The decree has yet to be enforced by the administration, and the Session statement is the first step on this path.

“Failure to deport immigrants convicted of crimes puts entire communities at risk, especially those in sanctuary settings that seek to protect violators,” Sessions said during a White House briefing.

The finances allocated by the US Department of Justice usually go to the needs of the local police: improving crime prevention methods, purchasing equipment, and assisting crime victims.

To enforce the Donald Trump decree, the US Attorney General must await the findings of the US Department of Homeland Security as to which city or county of state is a haven for illegal immigrants. Last week, the Ministry published a list of 120 cities and counties that do not want to cooperate with the federal government in this matter.

Recall that earlier the mayor of Miami-Dade County ordered to obey the order of President Donald Trump, which obliges them to cooperate with federal authorities in the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants.

However, the authorities of the other cities of refuge refuse from cooperation with the White House and intend to protect immigrants, guided by local laws, and may lose billions of dollars coming from the federal budget.

The history of refuge cities can be traced back to the 1980s, when Cambridge and other localities headed by churches defended immigrants from Haiti and war-ravaged countries in Central America from deportation.

Modern cities of refuge seek to protect illegal immigrants who fled violence and poverty from Mexico, Central America and other countries after the war.

Most cities received this name because of the local law on trusting immigrants and restricting cooperation with the police regarding the issue of deportation.
