Congress succeeded in reaching an agreement on the budget: the shutdown is canceled

Democrats and Republicans in Congress reached a preliminary agreement on the protection of the southern borders of the United States. This should help avoid another suspension of government work on February 15, when the time allowed for negotiations expires.

Republican senator Richard Shelby said that the group that is engaged in negotiations to resolve the issue of financing the strengthening of border security has managed to reach an “agreement in principle,” writes “Voice of America".

However, during his speech to reporters, Shelby did not disclose details, but noted that they are being worked out.

The senator also expressed hope that the White House will support the deal.

“We are building a wall anyway,” he said.

Negotiators worked until late at night hoping to conclude an agreement on financing border security programs until February 15 and prevent another shatdown. This was stated by Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy. "Senator Shelby and I ... both agree that we could complete this tonight, and not endure for tomorrow."

Asked how the latest negotiations differed from those over the weekend, Rep. Kay Granger said, “Maybe we got some sleep. It always helps to make a decision,” she is quoted as saying CNN.

An employee of the Congressional apparatus, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the draft agreement provided for the allocation of $ 1,37 billion for the construction of a new fence along the border.

About the same amount Congress has allocated last year, while it is significantly less than Trump requires.

According to the source, these funds will not go to the construction of the wall, to which Trump has been calling since the beginning of his election campaign in 2016. Democrats consider this initiative ineffective and too costly.

Any agreement must now be approved in the House of Representatives, the Senate and, finally, signed by Trump, so there is no certainty that the threat of shatdaun has been completely removed.

A spokesman for the Democratic Party said that as soon as they reached an agreement, a "ton of work" remained to be done. If this agreement cannot be approved by the end of this week, the US government may again partially suspend its work.

Shortly after the agreement was reached, Trump met with supporters in the border town of El Paso, Texas, emphasizing the advantages of the wall, which he said could protect Americans from criminals, drugs, and the “enormous onslaught” of migrants.

Trump said he heard about the progress in the negotiations before going on stage, but did not discuss the details.

“They say progress has been made. Just know. Just now, right now,” he said. “I said, wait a minute, I have to take care of my people in Texas.” I need to go out. I don't even want to hear about it. I don't want to hear about it."

“Just so you know, we're going to build the wall anyway. Progress may have been made, perhaps not,” he said.

White House officials believe that this is an option, even if the president signs an agreement in order to avoid another government closure.

On the eve of the negotiations logged in to a standstill due to the demand of the Democrats to focus the efforts of the migration services on the detention of migrants only with a criminal past, and not those who have expired visas.

Democrats hoped to agree to reduce the number of places for detention by approximately half - to 16,5 thousand. Approximately the same number of migrants were detained during the presidency of Barack Obama.

Trump attacked his opponents with criticism.

“I don't think the Democrats on the border committee will be allowed to make a deal by their leaders. They are offering very little money for a desperately needed border wall, and now suddenly cutting the number of places for convicted violent criminals,” he tweeted.

On January 25, President Donald Trump announced the reopening of government agencies after a shutdown that began at the end of the year, lasted 35 days and became the longest in US history.

Shatdaun touched 800 of thousands of federal employees who were sent on unpaid leave or forced work without getting paid.

The stumbling block in the budget dispute was Trump's claim to allocate 5,7 billion to border fortifications. It is about building a wall on the border with Mexico as part of the campaign promise to strengthen the fight against illegal migrants.

Democrats who control the House of Representatives refuse to allocate this money, stating the pointlessness of building such a wall.
