Major US cities that have laws that protect illegal immigrants in their territories from deportation will lose billions of dollars from the federal budget if elected President Donald Trump fulfills his election promise to deprive them of state funding for refusing to cooperate in catching and deportation illegals

The largest of these “refuge cities”, as they are called, New York will lose $ 10,4 billion a year, reports CNN.

Most of the federal money in New York goes to the Department of Social Services, жCity Administration and Children's Administration.

Nevertheless, the mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, said that he did not intend to divide families and would stand up for the protection of illegal migrants.

Another “refuge city” in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will lose about $ 6 million per year, this is 2% of the city budget.

But his mayor, Javier Gonzalez, intends to keep the status of “refuge” outside the city.

“The loss of federal funds will, of course, be significant, but we are not going to give up our values. We have to find our way to get through this, and we will find it,” he said.

Gonzalez added that the city receives the main profit from tourists, and illegal migrants contribute to their services, and therefore to the city budget.

He advised Trump to reform the US immigration system instead of deportation.

The mayors of other “sanctuary cities”—Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Baltimore—also said they would stick to their values ​​and do not intend to help deport migrants because they consider such actions a violation of human rights.
