Yellow and pink snow fell in Sochi and Odessa. What's happening?

According to the hydrometeorological center, dust particles from the cloudy front from the Mediterranean Sea, Crete and North Africa colored precipitation in the south of Ukraine and Russia in pink, red and yellow.

Fine dust not only falls along with precipitation, painting snow, but also hangs in the air: the sky above Sochi was covered with a light haze, and in droplets of rain going in the city, dust particles were noticeable, reported RBC eyewitnesses.

In addition to the resorts of the Krasnodar Territory, colored snow fell in the Odessa region and in Moldova. In the south of Moldavia, the snow had a yellow-orange tint, yellowish and pink precipitations fell in Odessa.

Natural phenomenon is not dangerous, say weather forecasters. Fine dust causes troubles to residents of regions where sandstorms rage, residents of the island of Crete and the countries of North Africa especially suffer from them, said Andrei Bondar, head of the Krasnodar regional hydrometeorological center, to Interfax.

The sand and fine dust raised by dust storms in North Africa was transferred to the Black Sea region by powerful air currents. The sediments entrained small particles that floated in the air, behind them.

In addition to sand, plant pollen has also entered the atmosphere - now they are blooming in the subtropics. Danger to people and the environment, this phenomenon is not, told RBC weather forecasters.

The mayor of Izmail in the Odessa region, Andrei Abramchenko, reported that snow samples were sent to the Danube Hydrometeorology Observatory and the Odessa Laboratory Center of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection for laboratory research.

“Laboratory studies conducted by specialists from the Danube Hydrometeorological Observatory showed that the acidity of the presented snow samples was neutral, the sediment contained a sandy-brown mixture, and no harmful chemicals were detected,” Abramchenko wrote in Facebook.
