Dumplings and sunflowers: how Ukrainians in the United States celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day

Ukrainians celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day not only in their homeland, but also in other countries, including the United States.

The house of this family in the American capital can be recognized in several quarters, because a large Ukrainian flag flutters over its door.

Valentina Alekseevich lives in two countries: half a year - with children and grandchildren in the USA, half a year - with her husband in Ukraine.

According to her, for a few months in America, she has time to miss Ukraine.

“We don’t choose our homeland... And we love it, no matter what. And we expect everything to be fine. I miss home so much that when we arrive in Boryspil, for me there is such beauty around me - I can kiss the ground,” the woman admitted.

Especially for Independence Day, the family prepares for a festive dinner and prepares traditional Ukrainian dumplings, and a large bouquet of sunflowers decorates the table.

Valentina Alekseevich shared the secret of the branded Poltava dumplings: for the dough to be soft, knead it for 7 minutes. However, according to the housewife, in the USA it is not so easy to find a tasty stuffing for dumplings.

“You won’t find good cottage cheese here. Basically too runny, which is not suitable for dumplings. There are no cherries or strawberries here like we have in Ukraine,” said Valentina Alekseevich.

The woman’s son Andrew has been living and working in the USA as a programmer for 12 for years, but he constantly monitors the situation in Ukraine.

“IT companies are developing in Ukraine, and Ukraine will someday become an advanced country. She has great potential,” noted Andrey.

He equipped his house using American technology, but he still grows vegetables on the balcony in the Ukrainian manner, which, he said, are enough for salads.

In addition to family celebrations, in many cities of the United States in the coming month will be public events dedicated to the Independence Day of Ukraine, in particular embroidery race in New York; holiday concerts in Los Angeles и San Francisco; Ukrainian festival in Miami and many other events in different parts of the USA
