In New York, want to make parking for local

The city authorities of New York want to create parking only for local residents in some areas of the city, including northern Manhattan, writes AM New York.

Two relevant bills were introduced to the city council. One of the bills - designed by Mark Levin, Helen Rosenthal, Kate Powers and Diana Isle - proposes to introduce a parking system only for locals on 60th Street in Manhattan. The second bill of Yadanza Rodriguez invites non-locals to pay for such parking.

According to the authors of legislative initiatives, residents of north Manhattan are constantly faced with parking problems because of the suburban residents who come to the area to work, leave their cars, and then get to the city center by subway.

“Manhattan faces excessive congestion that harms the economy, threatens the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, and degrades the environment. We can't afford to be one of the biggest cities in America without a parking permit system,” Levine says.

The bill proposes to the transport department to determine the areas where in order to use the parking, it will be necessary to show a permit, which will allow to leave the car for certain hours and on certain days of the week.

“Paying for parking will reduce congestion, save time and provide additional money to 8,5 million New Yorkers. It's worth remembering that only 1,4 million New Yorkers own vehicles; most residents use public transportation," Rodriguez said.

Both bills offer to make 80% parking spaces only for local residents, the remaining 20% will also be available to non-residents.

The department of transport said that the mayor of the city, Bill de Blasio, will consider bills.
