7 superyachts owned by Russian oligarchs have already been arrested in the world: what are they like

As part of a campaign of international pressure on Russia, authorities around the world have confiscated seven yachts belonging to billionaire oligarchs linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Edition NBC News found out which are the largest superyachts that have been confiscated since the beginning of the invasion.

The seizure of yachts following Russia's February 24 invasion of Ukraine is "just the beginning," White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters this week, and more action is expected soon as an international task force works to identify additional assets that could be seized or frozen.

Lady M

Italian authorities this month seized a 215-foot (65,5 m) superyacht called Lady M. It is owned by Alexei Mordashov, Russia's richest businessman, and is valued at $27 million. The vessel, which requires a crew of 14, has six guests cabins, swimming pool and gym.

But she pales in comparison to another yacht, the $500 million Nord, a 464-foot (141 m) vessel with two helipads and a waterfall that can accommodate 36 guests. This month it was anchored in the Seychelles, where US and European Union sanctions do not apply.

Lena

Italian officials also seized the 132-foot (40 m) Lena superyacht owned by energy tycoon Gennady Timchenko. Her cost is estimated at $8 million, she has five cabins and can accommodate 10 guests.

SY A

SY A is short for Sailing. Yacht A is one of the largest superyachts in the world. The 469-foot (143 m) vessel, worth over $440 million, is owned by tycoon Andrey Melnichenko and has eight decks, multiple elevators, an underwater observation deck and the world's tallest masts. He was detained in the Italian port of Trieste.

Valerie

The Spanish authorities have arrested Sergey Chemezov's 279-foot (85 m) superyacht Valerie, moored in Barcelona. Chemezov, a former KGB officer, heads the Rostec state conglomerate. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez spoke about the arrest on television. “We are talking about a yacht that we estimate is worth $140 million,” Sanchez said.

Amore Vero

Officials in France have announced that they have confiscated the 289-foot (88 m) Amore Vero, which was undergoing repairs near Marseille. When they arrived, authorities said they found the crew preparing for an emergency take-off, although repairs were scheduled to take until April. The $120 million, seven-cabin yacht is linked to Igor Sechin, who the US Treasury Department calls a close ally of Putin.

Superyacht Royal Romance is blocked in the port of Rijeka. There are several courts of wealthy Russians and pro-Russian oligarchs, writes UNIAN.

The owner of this 92-meter luxury vessel until March last year was formally the Ukrainian politician and billionaire Viktor Medvedchuk, a close friend of Putin and the leader of the pro-Russian opposition in Ukraine.

Royal Romance is one of the five largest luxury yachts in the world. It is used exclusively for the needs of the owner and his guests. It is noteworthy that the yacht costs $200 million, and the annual cost of its maintenance and travel is estimated at $15-$20 million.

Crescent

In Spain, the 135-meter Crescent yacht was arrested, which is associated with the head of Rosneft, Igor Sechin.

The yacht flies the flag of the Cayman Islands and arrived in Spain from Italy in November 2021.

According to unofficial information, its cost exceeds $600 million.

The Spanish Ministry of Transport confirmed the detention, noting that the ship docked in the city of Tarragona on November 2 and requested permission from the coast guard to sail on March 4, but never sailed.

The yacht will be arrested until the Spanish authorities determine its ownership and find out if the owner is subject to EU sanctions.
