A lieutenant was arrested in Maryland who planned to 'destroy civilization'
Lieutenant of the US Coast Guard, who served in the headquarters in Washington, was arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist attack. At the home of 49-year-old Christopher Paul Hesson were searched, during which law enforcement officers found several thousand rounds of ammunition and 15 firearms, writes News.Ru.
According to CNN, citing documents sent to the federal court in Maryland, the man planned attacks on civilians, politicians and journalists. At the same time, Hesson was reportedly planning to kill civilians on a scale rarely occurring in American history.
According to the TV company, the lieutenant was inspired to prepare a crime for an example of right-wing extremist Anders Breivik, who committed the terrorist attack in July 2011 in Norway, killing 77 people.
Newsweek said that the lieutenant was taken into custody on February 15, he faces punishment for possession of opioid drugs and weapons.
In June 2017, Hesson wrote a letter outlining plans to carry out “biological attacks” with the goal of “total destruction of civilization.” “I dream of killing almost every person on Earth,” the document said. “I think the best thing to do is the plague, but how can I get the necessary Spanish flu, botulism, anthrax - I’m not sure yet, but I’ll find something,” Hesson wrote.
Lieutenant was fond of opioid analgesic tramadol. His drug use also stems from following Breivik's manifesto, notes Nationa lPublic Radio: "to take drugs to increase his ability to carry out attacks."
During a search of the lieutenant's apartment, special agents found documentation indicating Hesson had ordered "at least 4200 100 mg tramadol tablets" since 2016. And in his office, about 100 tablets of a synthetic opioid and a locked container were found containing more than 30 bottles containing human growth hormone.
A spreadsheet was found on Hesson's computer that is said to be a list of possible targets for the attack, listing senior current and former Democratic politicians, activists, political organizations and media figures "to be eliminated."
In particular, the lieutenant planned to attack Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senators Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand and Richard Blumenthal, as well as several well-known journalists of the TV channels MSNBC and CNN.
The psychological portrait of the would-be mass murderer portrayed in court documents is that of an angry, drug-addled man who spent decades searching neo-fascist and neo-Nazi literature for answers and desperately trying to make a “lasting impression on the world.”
Hesson has served as an officer at the headquarters of the US Coast Guard in Washington since 2016. Prior to that, he served in the US Marine Corps from 1988 to 1993, then moved to serve in the National Guard.
Experts declare “flagrant negligence” of Hesson’s command, Rossiyskaya Gazeta notes. It is unclear whether he underwent the appropriate mandatory medical checks while on duty, including a blood drug test. In addition, it is strange that he could even work in an elite US military unit, holding such anti-human views.
A court hearing on the preventive measure for a man will be held in the city of Greenbelt on Thursday, February 21.
