In California, sea lions made a commotion on the beach: they barked and ran at tourists

In the bay of La Jolla, California, sea lions began to bark at vacationers and run in the direction of people, reports CBS8.

Dozens of people gathered on the steps, sand and other surrounding areas next to two sea lions that were barking and lashing out at each other.

“Please give this big male sea lion plenty of space. They have bitten people, this species is a protected animal,” the lifeguard told beachgoers over the loudspeaker.

The lifeguards' announcement seemed to be ignored as the people on the beach stood in the same spot until a sea lion jumped out of the ocean and started attacking a sea lion on a rocky shore.

Tourists screaming began to scatter in different directions from the aggressive animal.

“Only locals, tourists, go home,” Japhet Perez, who was in the water and saw the situation, said in the video.

Japhet Perez is also a member of the Executive Board of the La Jolla Village Merchants Association.

“Sea lions and all marine life are essential to the village of La Jolla. We must respect their space and environment and treat them as neighbors. We firmly believe that we can coexist with them and peacefully share the same spaces,” Perez said.

According to NOAA Fisheries, California sea lions are protected throughout their range under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The group is working to protect them in many ways, aiming to ensure that the population remains stable and does not fall to low or threatening levels.
