The Australian police as part of a major anti-terrorist operation uncovered a conspiracy, the purpose of which was to carry out a terrorist attack on an airplane.

“In recent days, law enforcement has become aware that some people in Sydney were planning to carry out a terrorist attack using a homemade device,” said Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin.

“We believe this is Islamic terrorism,” Colvin said. “It’s what’s behind it that we’ll need to fully explore.” He added that authorities have little information about the location, date or time of the attack, but "we are looking into information indicating that the aviation industry is a potential target of this attack."

“A major joint counter-terrorism operation was carried out last night to foil a terrorist plot to bring down a plane,” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reporters. “The operation continues.”

As a result of the arrest of four people, a homemade bomb was discovered. Local media reported that it was, perhaps, a poisonous gas, which the terrorists were going to put in the cabin of the liner. Gas had to either kill or immobilize the passengers of the liner.

The detainees are Australians of Lebanese descent. All of them are relatives of each other.

According to Turnbull, heightened security measures are being taken at Australian domestic and international airports. The terrorist threat in the country remains at the “probable” level.
