Ukrainian proposed a project that can solve the housing problem of Houston

The “Beehive” project by artist and builder Nestor Topchy, whose goal is to create affordable housing and jobs for the society of Houston with the help of cargo containers, is of particular relevance after Harvey has destroyed tens of thousands of homes, writes “Voice of America".

In addition, the human desire to live in harmony with the environment and preserve natural resources also encourages him to talk about the consequences of natural disasters in the context of ecology, to share his thoughts on how to avoid such a catastrophe in the future.

A talented artist, icon painter, sculptor and builder Nestor Topchy was born and raised in the USA, but he felt and developed a connection with Ukrainian culture all his life.

How was the idea of ​​"Hive"

44 buildings, each consisting of 11 shipping containers, 3 or 4 stories high, with the first level used for commercial purposes and the next for residential purposes. The hemisphere-shaped structure has 148 apartments for those who use wheelchairs - this is exactly how Nestor imagined the project when he created the project.

The “Hive” should become the center of entrepreneurship and cultural life. In its open spaces there will be offices, studios, shops, restaurants, leisure facilities. In addition, the project, based on the recycling of freight containers, offers an affordable housing price.

The idea of ​​creating the “Hive” arose from Nestor Topchy when he saw rows of cargo containers, folded one on one, in the shipping channel of Houston. He was amazed by their practicality and strict beauty, and this image reminded him of the Ukrainian Easter egg:

“I was attracted by the design of containers interconnected, like frog eggs or halves of pysankas with a cut off tip.”

Easter egg occupies an honorable place in the life and work of the artist: he creates masterpieces and passes the tradition on to next generations to Ukrainians living in the diaspora.

Now one of the aspects of “The Hive” is being implemented in the artist’s yard on a small scale.

In addition, work is underway on the separate creation of a hive with 23 containers in the forest where there is no water or electricity. According to the plan of Mr. Topchy, here it will be possible to hold wedding ceremonies and organize a family camp.

The artist is in no hurry to seek funding, but focused on the creation of large projects:

“We have time to do it. The idea becomes an authentic project that will attract and already attract people who share the vision of what it is. It will require the participation of many people with different talents, but it is feasible. ”

The team working on developing the Hive concept includes many experts from various fields - architecture, landscape, development, fundraising, businessmen and financiers with experience in large-scale projects. Some people contribute and leave, others join.
