A former student of the Redlands County School in California, who became the father of his school teacher's child convicted of having sex with him and two other students, will receive $ 6 million in compensation from the school district, according to a court decision.

“The amount of compensation commensurate with the severity of the harm caused to this young victim and his family, and also highlights the extreme neglect on the part of school officials who turned a blind eye to the teacher’s criminal behavior,” said the prosecutor in the case, Vina Finaldi, writes LA Times.

29-year-old school teacher Laura Whitehurst was arrested in July 2013 for criminal charges under the 41 clause regarding illegal sex. She pleaded guilty to the 4 clauses, in particular for having had unlawful sex with a person who had not reached 18 for years while teaching in the Redlands.

Whitehurst was sentenced to imprisonment in 1 and released after 6 months. She shares custody of the child with a former student, who is currently 21 year.

In the lawsuit, a former student’s lawyers argued that school officials knew about his relationship with Whitehurst and did not warn his family. Colleagues of the teacher claimed that when she became pregnant, none of the school staff had any doubts about paternity.

School district officials said they did not recognize violations on their part and blamed the teacher.

According to the victim, his relationship with Whitehurst began when he was 16 years old, she often gave him alcohol, and when she became pregnant, called it “a miracle,” claiming she did not believe in what she could conceive.
