The assassination of the President of Haiti: the authorities detained several criminals, including 2 Americans
On the night from 6 to 7 July unknown criminals broke into the residence of Haitian President Jovenel Moise... They shot the head of state and seriously wounded his wife. Who turned out to be the killers, said the publication with the BBC.
On the night of the incident, a real battle unfolded in the house. The walls were covered with bullet marks. And on the body of the 53-year-old president, they counted 12 gunshot wounds.
Haitian authorities said the attack was carried out by a well-armed and organized group, which included 26 retired Colombian military personnel and two Haitian Americans. 17 of them, including both Americans, were detained, three were killed in shootings with law enforcement officers, and eight more remain in hiding.
Immediately after the attack, it was reported that the criminals communicated with each other in English and Spanish (Haiti is a French-speaking country).
“Foreigners came to our country to kill the president,” said the head of the Haitian police, Leon Charles, at a press conference where journalists were shown the arrested people and the weapons seized from them.
The operation to detain the suspects was watched by an excited crowd, which burned several vehicles and staged a demonstration outside the police station, where the arrested were brought.
Colombian Defense Minister Diego Molano said that, according to preliminary information, former members of the Colombian army took part in the attack. He promised that Bogotá would help in the investigation of the murder.

Washington has not yet confirmed information that US citizens were among the attackers. In Haiti, meanwhile, the police are looking for those who ordered the crime and asked the American authorities to help in the investigation.
Daring attack
Armed assassins stormed Moise's residence in the Haitian capital. In the published video from surveillance cameras, armed men in black are heard posing as employees of the US Drug Enforcement Agency and ordering everyone to lie on the floor.
After the murder, the criminals searched the president's bedroom and office.
The children of the head of state were taken to safety, Acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph said. The president's wife was taken to Florida to save her life. The doctors reportedly were able to stabilize her condition.
Motives, performers, customers
Joseph, who has been making all the statements on behalf of the authorities since the head of state was assassinated, said the president could have been shot because he "fought some oligarchs."
“We don’t know if there is a connection between these oligarchs and foreign mercenaries,” the head of government said.
According to Charles, those killed and detained were members of the same unit, which had the task of eliminating the president.
Charles clarified that the police are now looking for the organizers of the crime - those who ordered and planned the murder.
Who is in power
The Haitian constitution provides that in the event of the death, incapacity or resignation of the president, the Chief Justice will take over, but he recently died of COIVD-19. After him, the prime minister becomes the main one.
