Trump's statements were criticized by Democrats, who decided that the president is in a hurry to politicize the tragedy, while law enforcement agencies are trying to establish the circumstances of the incident.

On Wednesday, Trump blamed Senate Democratic Senate Leader Charles Sumer, tweeting that the “terrorist” had arrived in the US as part of the “visa program of ethnic diversity, brainchild of Chuck Schumer.

“I need a program based on the principles of meritocracy,” he added.

Schumer accused Trump of "politicizing and splitting America, which he seems to be doing whenever there is a national tragedy." Schumer said that "he always believed, and continues to believe, that immigration is a blessing for America."

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the president’s tweets "do not help matters."

Later, the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabi Sanders, said that Trump did not accuse Sumer of the attack, and that only Saipov was responsible for it.

According to her, Trump considers Saipov an "enemy combatant."

At the same time, she noted that the immigration lottery, through which Saipov entered the US in the 2010 year, should be canceled.

The immigration lottery was part of a law passed in 1990 that was initiated by Schumer, then a congressman, along with 25 other democrats and 6 Republicans.

Uzbekistan is not among the countries that the Trump administration считает security threats requiring a ban on entry.
