TikTok will ban children and teens from watching videos for more than an hour a day
TikTok is taking action to limit the amount of time teens spend on the app. On March 1, TikTok announced that it will be releasing a number of new features that are aimed at teens and families, and in particular, to limit the time of use of the application, reports Entrepreneur.
In the coming weeks, users under the age of 18 will be limited to 60 minutes of screen time per day. The restriction can be bypassed by entering a passcode, but users will have to make a conscious decision to stay signed in to the app. A parent or guardian will be responsible for entering the password for users under 13, which will give them 30 additional minutes to use the app.
TikTok cited a study by Internet Matters when it announced its decision to set daily time limits for the app. A nonprofit found that when people are aware of how much time they spend on something, they are more likely to make good use of that time.
The company also noted that it has been working with the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children's Hospital to determine an acceptable period of use.

Other new features include customizable daily usage limits. Parents will be able to set a specific amount of time kids can spend on the app, a Screen Time dashboard that gives a breakdown of app usage, and scheduled disconnect notifications.
These features are an extension of TikTok's already existing teen protection initiatives, including tracking accounts that are automatically turned off for those aged 13 to 15.
