None of the suspects plead guilty. At the end of 2017, the couple were charged with fraud. According to the investigation, from January 2014 to December 2016, 45-year-old Tia Kaganovich, 57-year-old Ramazi Mitaishvili and 42-year-old Siora Iskanderovova were illegally reimbursed under the programs Medicare and Medicaid for the amount of 19 million dollars. The total amount of damage, according to prosecutors, was $44 million; the criminals did not manage to receive the rest of the money because they were detained.

Laboratory owners received money by overestimating the cost of the procedures and tests carried out in their medical facilities; in addition, they carried out unnecessary but expensive tests for patients, often without a doctor’s referral. Sometimes the patients themselves were also involved in the scheme, who were paid “kickbacks” ($ 20-50) for agreeing to undergo unnecessary tests, which the insurance will pay for later.

After that, the scam labs received money from health insurance programs, money was laundered through several companies, and then used by criminals.

All three were charged with fraud, falsifying documents and money laundering. The defendants are awaiting trial on their case.
