The United States intends to divide illegal immigrants at the border into women and children.

The US Department of Homeland Security is considering separating women and children detained for illegally crossing the border between Mexico and the United States.

On this, with reference to its sources, the agency said Reuters.

The proposal aims to keep mothers from trying to immigrate to the United States with children. The introduction of such a measure will allow the authorities to keep parents in custody while they are challenging deportation or are awaiting a decision on an asylum application. Children at this time will be placed under guardianship in order to protect them by social authorities, while they can be brought up by relatives of detainees in the United States or their legal representative.

Earlier, the US President called for the suspension of the so-called “detention and release” policy, which allows illegal immigrants to live freely in the US while awaiting the end of their trial.

The document on the separation of women and children was submitted to 2 February, according to sources, the US Department of Homeland Security has not yet made a final decision on this issue.

Neither the Department nor the White House responded to the request of journalists to comment on this information.

Around 54, thousands of children and their parents or guardians were detained on the US-Mexico border from October 1 2016 to January 31 2017; this figure is more than 2 times the number of children detained at the border during the same period of time a year earlier.
