Storm Florence claimed the lives of 15 people and threatens catastrophic floods
Tropical Storm Florence, which hit the East Coast of the United States, weakened to the category of tropical depression, but continues to cause flooding in North and South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. The heavy rains will also affect the territories in the northeastern United States, writes The Weather Channel.
Because of the storm, Florence killed 15 people.
So, because of a collapsed tree in Wilmington, North Carolina, the mother and 8-month-old child died.
In Wayne County, North Carolina, an 81-year-old man died during an evacuation operation. Another 78-year-old man died due to electric current.
An 77-year-old man died after he went outside to check on his hunting dogs, and was swept away by a rush of wind and water.
Three more people died due to heavy flooding in Duplin County, North Carolina.
An 61-year-old woman died in a crash in Union, South Carolina. Due to bad weather, she lost control and crashed into a tree.
One of the dead was a pickup driver driving west in Kershaw County when he was pulled down from the roadway. The car crashed into the overpass. The driver died in a collision
In another case, 23-year-old Michael Dalton Pierce drowned. He was a passenger in a pickup truck, which overturned due to the strong flow of water. The driver of the pickup and another passenger managed to escape.
A woman who was in the car when a tree fell on her also died.
A few more deaths occurred in North Carolina during the time of Florence, but not directly related to the effects of the weather: one woman died from unspecified causes at a shelter; another woman died due to a heart attack, and the ambulance did not have time to arrive at her call because of the road lined with trees; in addition, the couple died due to suicide murder.
According to the US National Hurricane Observatory, on Sunday, the wind speed at the center of the storm is about 15,2 m / s. The tropical depression moves inland towards the west at a speed of about 3,6 m / s.
Flood warning is valid for Samposson County and other parts of North Carolina and northern South Carolina. Floods threaten significant damage.
According to the National Hurricane Center, additional precipitation is expected in the following areas:
- from 10 to 15 centimeters in North Carolina and north of South Carolina.
- from 12 to 25 centimeters in central and western North Carlin and southwest Virginia.
- from 2 to 10 centimeters in west-central Virginia.
In addition, rains are expected to spill in Kinston, Burgau, Cinquapin, Lumberton, Manchester, Feithville, Conway and Galivants Ferry due to rain.
Let us remind you that the authorities of the states of Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, as well as the capital of the country, Washington (District of Columbia), previously introduced a state of emergency. The storm has already caused flooding in parts of South and North Carolina. Earlier, in these two states, the evacuation of residents of coastal areas was announced - in total, more than 1,5 million people were forced to leave their homes.
