What do weather forecasters expect in states located along the path of Hurricane Florence
The most devastating effects of Hurricane Florence are felt in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, although neighboring states will also have some of the consequences of a strong hurricane, which is expected to come ashore at the end of Thursday or early Friday.
Here is the forecast from state to state:
North Carolina
It is expected that the hurricane will show all its strength in North Carolina, where hundreds of thousands of people were subject to mandatory evacuation.
The National Weather Service of Newport, North Carolina, reported that Florence will be remembered for its significant effects, including storm surge, strong winds, possible tornadoes and high precipitation.
When the hurricane reaches the shore, it is expected that the wind speed will be around 120 miles per hour (193 km / h). Houses and buildings may be damaged.
Numerous rainfalls will lead to large-scale “catastrophic flooding”. Cities like Wilmington, Raleigh and Fayetteville are in a zone of devastating floods.
"It looks like the storm will linger over the region and bring life-threatening flooding," said AccuWeather meteorologist Marshall Moss.
In addition, the waves are dangerous. Their height can reach 12 feet in height (3,6 meters) and can flood coastal areas from Cape Fear to Cape Lookout.
Южная Каролина
At Myrtle Beach in Charleston, storm waves with a height of 6 feet (1,8 meters) are expected.
In Palmetto County, flooding is expected due to heavy precipitation.
“The main life-threatening risk may be prolonged heavy rainfall followed by flooding,” the weather service in Columbia, South Carolina, said.
Virginia
Even if Virginia is not in the path of Hurricane Florence, there is still a very real threat. Southeast Virginia, including the Richmond and Norfolk areas, could see "life-threatening, if not historic amounts of rainfall" between Friday and Saturday, the weather service in Wakefield, Virginia, warned.
Maryland, Delaware, Washington, DC
Parts of Maryland and Delaware may be in the area of excessive rainfall.
"The threat of significant rainfall and flooding exists through the weekend and early next week," says the weather service in Washington, D.C.
West Virginia
The National Weather Service reported that “a significant amount of precipitation is possible early next week in the mountain state.”
The mountainous terrain of the state is always a concern when there is rain in the forecast. "There could be devastating flooding in the hills and mountains of West Virginia," AccuWeather President Joel Myers warned.
