Russia demands $4,4 million from Norway because deer crossed the border and ate up pastures
Russia is demanding about $4,4 million in compensation from Norway after 42 Norwegian deer crossed the border and gnawed out Russian pastures. Writes about it Business Insider.
Both countries share a common border in the Arctic. And although there is a fence preventing reindeer from crossing the border, it was built back in 1954, and parts of it have fallen into disrepair, the Norwegian Directorate of Agriculture (NDAA) said in a statement.
Because of the dilapidated fence, 42 deer were able to cross the Russian border this year in search of better pastures in the Pasvik Nature Reserve, a Russian national park.

However, such transitions can be costly.
Russia has already filed one claim - with two different methods of calculating compensation - for grazing runaway reindeer, the Norwegian Directorate of Agriculture said.
These two methods, as reported by the Norwegian agricultural department, give “very different results” - from 50 thousand kroner ($4) to 700 million kroner ($47 million). The latter requirement is calculated based on the total number of days the deer spend grazing in the national park.
According to the agency, 40 of the 42 deer that crossed the border with Russia were returned and slaughtered due to fears that they would cross the border with Russia again. Two other deer may be returned soon.
Meanwhile, the NDSH reminded people to look after their reindeer - in Norway they are herded by indigenous people, the Sami.

“Crossing the border with Russia is strictly prohibited, including for deer,” the relevant directorate said in a statement.
Norway is currently repairing a 7-kilometer deer fence worth 3,7 million crowns ($350). The renovation is scheduled to be completed by October 1st.
